Mechanical fastening of heat sinks to power semiconductors using threaded hardware remains a very
reliable and straightforward means to assemble the two components.
Designers often use one of these three methods in this approach:
- Screws & Nuts
- Solderable Studs & Standoffs with Mounting Hardware
- Various Mounting Hardware
To simplify screw and nut attachment,
ThermaFlo assembles mounting kits for many common applications.
If you need a specific kit, we will configure one to meet your requirements.
One way to use the kits is as a repair depot replacement package.
Solderable studs and standoffs are permanently swaged into the heat sink for quick preassembly
with the transistor.
The device is placed over the stud(s) followed by the lock washer and nut.
The entire component is then dropped into plated thru holes and soldered into the PCB.
Clinch nuts are threaded nuts, permanently swaged into the heat sink for quick assembly of the transistor to the heat sink.
A single screw mounts the transistor to the heat sink reducing hardware requirements.
Solderable nuts are permanently swaged into the heat sink for quick pre-assembly with the transistor.
The device is mounted to the heatsink with screws installed from the top and the entire component
is dropped into the plated thru hole in the PCB.
The solderable nuts feature a closed end that prevents solder from wicking into threads
and trapping contaminants or flux.
Solderable mounting tabs are tin plated spring steel or brass tabs that provide cost effective solderability.
The tabs lock securely to the heat sink fins for positive retention.
Spring action between tabs and plated thru holes holds the heat sinks upright and in place for wave solder.
Device mounting studs are available as options on certain vertical and board mount heat sinks
as a time saving aid for mounting semiconductors.
This optional features speed up production assembly time and reduce hardware requirements.
Solderable roll pins are an added option to vertically mounted extruded heat sinks to make them wave solderable.
The roll pins are available with and without a stand-off shoulder.

Screw & Nut Assembly Mounting Kits
The use of screws during the assembly of a device to a heat sink produces
the greatest amount of force when mating a heat sink with a semiconductor device.
ThermaFlo offers several mounting kits that can be ordered with the appropriate mounting hardware.
